Sick Building

Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is a term used to describe health conditions, or building-related symptoms, linked to the poor air quality in the building. Indoor air pollutants within a building can be caused by: water damage, fire damage, poor air filtration & circulation, bioaerosols such as bacteria and mold, combustion sources, building materials, furnishings, cleaning products, and personal care products.

A diagnosis of the disease is made based upon the exclusion of other diseases and is determined through sampling and testing indoor air quality for chemical and/or biological contaminants such as dust mites, mold, lead, asbestos, and more. Buildings with SBS may cause its occupants to complain of: eye, nose and throat irritation; neurotoxic or general health problems; skin irritation; hypersensitivity reactions; infectious diseases; and sensory damage.

Many sources can cause indoor air pollutants within a building. They include: combustion sources, fire damage, building materials, furnishings, cleaning products, personal care products, water damage, poor air duct systems and bioaerosols such as bacteria and mold.

TERS experts are fully trained and qualified to:

  • Perform air quality testing and identify indoor air pollutants.
  • Identify indoor environmental conditions and contamination causing sick build syndrome.
  • Recommend and execute solutions for air quality remediation that eliminate sick building syndrome.
  • Perform flood, sewage and water damage cleanup and repair.
  • Perform fire, smoke and soot damage repair and restoration.
